I can’t believe it’s already December and a new year is nearly upon us. This year has been significant for me and my practice, as I’ve been able to expand my ability to care for patients through new techniques. If you saw my newsletter last month, you may have noticed the announcement that I purchased a piece of equipment that will allow me to add Microdermabrasion services at the Phoenician salon. Used alone or in combination with the chemical peel, we get incredible results and can even improve most types of scars and dark spots. I am so grateful to be able to provide cutting edge aesthetic medicine treatment to my patients and see how happy it makes them.
What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a pretty technical sounding word, but the technique is actually fairly straightforward and can offer huge benefits to the health and appearance of one’s skin. You have probably head of exfoliating products that serve to remove the top layer of dead skin cells on the body. These products are sold in creams and face washes all over the world.
Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure that goes one step further. It is used to remove the top layer of skin and dead cells, which are damaged by exposure to the sun, the environment, and our natural aging process.
One major benefit is that with microdermabrasion, there is minimal down time, allowing you to easily fit treatment into your day-to-day schedule. Your skin is temporarily pink but fully recovers within 24 hours. It is not painful and doesn’t require surgery or anesthetics. That may help people who cannot take “down time” for healing. Along with the benefits of looking and feeling great, it is an excellent self-care treatment. Read more about the benefits of microdermabrasion.
How Does Microdermabrasion Work?
Microdermabrasion is a technique that your doctor can use to treat your skin, and it works similar to exfoliation, but with much more profound results. There are two forms of microdermabrasion, Crystal Microdermabrasion and a newer and safer method called Diamond Microdermabrasion.
With the microcrystalline method, a small device that uses micro-crystals is used to “sand blast” away the dead skin cells on the top layer of skin. It is not necessarily the safest method, because it’s possible for the tiny particles of crystal to get in the mouth or eyes, and these can be harmful to your health.
Diamond microdermabrasion treatments use of a diamond tipped wand that is then used to “scratch or sand” away the top level of the dermis while the machine’s vacuum system sucks away dirt, debris and dead cells.
At the Phoenician Salon, I am proud to be able to use a new diamond-tip microdermabrasion machine that treats skin issues more effectively and safely. In this type of treatment, dead skin cells are exfoliated and vacuumed off the face with the machine that uses microdermabrasion tips covered in tiny diamonds. This procedure doesn’t cause any particles to be emitted that can get in the eyes or mouth, and is regarded as an especially safe form of treatment. Not only that, this procedure is known to be most effective on deep acne scars or old stretch marks.
As you will read in this article, which effectively explains the differences, the preferred method is the diamond-tip method.
“For the sake of both perceived safety and effectiveness, crystal microdermabrasion machines (with aluminum oxide or sodium bicarbonate crystals) are slowly being phased out and replaced with diamond microdermabrasion machines.”
The Benefits of Microdermabrasion
No chemicals or anesthesia are used in the procedure, which is known for being simple and pain-free. It’s appropriate for most skin types because it is non-invasive, and can effectively reduce or eliminate wrinkles, acne, age spots, stretch marks, and more.
